Is happiness unattainable?

I suffered a terrible loss of a loved one today....it was very terrible and I'd like to get rid of the imagery I was left of them in their last momment....till today I've always turned the "other cheek"...let out a deep sigh and tried to move on no matter what. It seems that the world is plagued with misery....it seems that today that point was driven home even more....while someone in the world is dying, suffering, starving....someone is probably experiencing the happiest moment in their life.....I've had my fair share of unhappiness in my life.....some extreme....some that was not even worth getting sad over..... so my question is this.....is their really any true happiness? Can it ever really be achieved when someone else is going through something horrible while someone else is happily happy?
