Why did the USA support so many dictatorships?

The alternative to these dictators was that their countries would have overthrown them and put socialist governments in power. Socialism is anathema to everything the US stands for, so, instead, they supported right wing, corrupt dictators, who would allow the global capitalism that the Americans support, into their countries.
